Data Protection
This page explains, as plainly as we can, what happens to information about you when you read British Hotels Guide or write to us. The short version is that we collect very little, we do not sell anything, and we do not follow you around the internet.
Who is responsible
British Hotels Guide is run by the small editorial team described on The Team and the Idea. For anything relating to your personal data, you can reach us at notes@britishhotelsguide.com.
A deliberately simple website
Nothing on these pages is generated on the fly for each visitor. There are no user accounts, no comment system, no newsletter database and no shopping basket. We do not use analytics or audience measurement tools, we show no adverts, and we have no tracking pixels or social media widgets that report your visit to third parties. Fonts and images are served from our own domain.
What is processed, and why
Technical server logs
Like almost every website, ours is delivered by a hosting provider whose servers automatically record basic technical details when a page is requested: your IP address, the date and time, the page asked for, your browser type and whether the request succeeded. These logs exist to deliver the site, keep it secure and investigate faults or abuse. They are kept only for a limited period by the provider and are not used by us to identify or profile visitors. As the lawful basis, we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the site online and protected.
Your cookie banner choice
When you answer the cookie banner, your browser stores that choice in its local storage so the banner does not reappear on every page. This stays on your device and is never sent to us. More detail is on Cookies on This Site.
Emails you send us
An email to us brings us your address, any name you sign with and the contents of your message. We use this only to read and answer your message, and to fix an article if you have reported a problem. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in replying to correspondence. We keep messages only as long as needed to deal with them, then delete them, unless a longer record is genuinely necessary, for example to show how a correction was handled. The contact form on our Reach Us page simply opens your own email program; nothing is submitted to or stored on the website.
Sharing
Personal data is never sold, rented out or swapped with anyone. The only third parties involved are the companies that host the website and handle our email, acting on our behalf. Some of these services may process data outside the UK; where they do, we rely on the safeguards the law requires for such transfers.
Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the right to:
- find out whether we hold anything about you, and get a copy of it;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have data erased where there is no good reason to keep it;
- object to processing based on our legitimate interests, or ask us to restrict it;
- receive data you provided in a portable format where that applies.
Send us an email to exercise any of them, and you will hear back within the period the law sets. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator.
Children
The site is written for adults and does not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this page
If the way we run the site changes, for instance if we ever add a new service, we will update this page before the change takes effect.
